The inevitable loss of innocence that we all experience as we mature into adults is central to my practice. As a boy goes through adolescence he is forced to come to grips with pressures to be masculine. In my work this transition is represented through the presentation of parts of my own awkward experience as I become a man in my own life. I play two characters; myself as a disillusioned young boy forced to deal with adult situations, and the hopeless romantic someone who is equally pathetic and heroic. Using these characters I want to create work that can exist somewhere in the middle of these two extremes.
I am constantly living out the memory of my high school production of "Bye Bye Birdie", a musical in which I played the father character. After receiving accolade for my rendition of "What‘s the Matter with Kids Today," I am still searching for that praise in other aspects of my life. I have been performing stand up comedy and magic at different venues in North America, and recently I was honored with acceptance into the national chapter of The Society of American Magicians.
A way of the magician is one of deception and illusion. Magic and comedy are used as tools to assist people in approaching both the conceptual aspects and deeper themes of the work. I am presenting a variety of situations with which I can share a common experience with my audience. I am a humanitarian, I am sincere, and I want to provide an all access bearing of my soul. I create a milieu where people are able to empathize the feelings I express. I want to represent parts of everyone‘s daily emotive experience. In a world defined by talk show therapy, this transition from private to public leads to the process of personal reflection, finally I hope to a provide a common understanding.
